People who are against leather or are looking for a cheap alternative have tried to make so many materials to replace leather and they are called imitation leather materials. One such substitute for real leather is Pineapple leather. It is also known as pinatex pineapple leather.

Pinatex leather was developed by Dr. Carmen Hijosa during 1990s while she was working with Philippines leather export industry and she was inspired by the traditional Filipino weaving techniques using natural fibers like pineapple leaves.

Pineapple leather is made from 80% of leaves fiber and 20% of poly-lactic acid. Then it is coated with PU material.

Pros and Cons of Pinatex Leathers

Despite being a sustainable material, pineapple leather does possess some disadvantages. Here’s an overview:

Pros:

Though Piñatex leather is quite durable, it is not as durable as real leather.

2.| Sustainability

It is made from agricultural waste (Pineapple leaves) reducing environmental impact.

3.| Animal friendly

Piñatex leather requires no animals, so it is fully vegan. No animals are harmed in the production of pineapple leather.

4.| Versatility

It can be used widely in fashion, footwear, upholstery, and many more.

Cons:

1.| Non biodegradable

Since plastic polymers are used in the production of Piñatex, it is not as biodegradable as traditional leather.

2.| Availability

As Piñatex pineapple leather is relatively new, it is not as widely available as animal leather and synthetic leather.

3.| Surface texture

The surface and texture of Piñatex, like any synthetic leather, cannot match the elegance of real leather. Unlike real leather, it does not develop a beautiful patina with use.

4.| Performance and durability

Though pineapple leather possesses some water resistance, it is not fully resistant and can suffer irreversible damage if exposed to water and sunlight. Additionally, it does not match the durability of real leather.

How pinatex is made?

The Pineapple leather production process consists of various environmentally friendly steps that transform it from plant leaves into a sustainable material for various uses. Here is a detailed overview of the production process

1.| Pineapple leaves harvesting

Pineapple leaves are harvested after fruit harvested

2.| Cleaning the leaves

After the pineapple leaves are cleaned of dirt and impurities by rinsing them in water tanks before further processing.

3.| Processing

Clean cactus leaves are processed by extracting fibers from leaves by a process called decortication.

4.| Washing and drying

The fibers of pineapple leaves are washed again and dried by putting them under the sunlight.

5.| Processing into non-woven mesh

The dried fibers are now processed into sheets of non-woven mesh, which forms the base for pineapple leather.

6.| Finishing

The final step of pinatex production is coating the non-woven mesh with corn-based polylactic acid (PLA) and other plastic polymers like Polyurethane to create the finished product. Then the surface can also undergo other finishing processes like polishing, embossing, etc.

Environmental impact of pinatex leather

Piñatex pineapple leather is a sustainable alternative to animal leather, as it utilizes the waste products of pineapple farming. However, Piñatex leather is not fully biodegradable due to the chemicals used in its production, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and PU resin coating, which are bioplastics.

Pinatex cannot decompose as easily as real leather. However, it contains fewer plastics and pollutants than other vegan leathers (such as PU leather). For instance, Piñatex uses less than 20% polylactic acid.

Uses of pinatex leather

The cactus leather is a versatile material and can be used where traditional leather can be used like handbags, clothing, shoes, upholstery, automotive interiors, accessories, and many more. As pinatex is used by many brands.

Brands that use pinatex leather

Many world-renowned fashion brands are incorporating cactus leather into their products, including H&M, Hugo Boss, Luxtra, Stella McCartney, Beneath the Canopy, Veerah, Matt & Nat, Nael, Votch and many more are using it in fashion and accessories.

Brands like Nike, Po-zu, Veja, Bohema, Nuuwaï use pineapple leather in footwear.

Bentley Motors and Porsche are the brands that use pineapple leather in their cars.

In conclusion, If you ask me that if real leather has any alternative, I would say that real leather holds a special charm that cannot be replicated by any artificial material. Leather’s natural essence and the uniqueness of each skin give it an irreplaceable character. While pineapple leather is a sustainable option, can it replace real leather? In my view, nothing can replace the authenticity of natural leather.

However, Pineapple leather is well-suited for regions abundant in pineapple farming, and its production can offer significant economic opportunities in those areas. The production of Piñatex provides additional income for pineapple farmers by allowing them to sell what would otherwise be waste materials.
